The piano is my primary instrument, but my experimentation extends beyond sound to include text and field recordings, all rooted in a desire to draw inspiration from memories, dreams, and ambitions. I strive to maintain deeply personal elements in my work, such as my mother tongue and literal fragments from my journal writings, always embracing melody and the craft of songwriting.
The starting point of my creative process often involves extracting something from my subconscious mind. Techniques like automatic writing inspire text, while sometimes musical ideas come first, guiding me to unexpected places where I discover what I truly wish to explore. Nostalgia, isolation, contentment, and personal contradictions are recurring themes in my music.
Through composition, I seek to balance structure and spontaneity, crafting pieces that invite listeners into a space where sound becomes a vessel for memory and emotion. Music is my way of making sense of the world, and I hope my work resonates with those who engage with it."
Toni Mora is a composer, pianist, and sound artist from the island of Mallorca, Spain, currently based in Brooklyn, New York. His work seamlessly blends elements of jazz, classical, and contemporary music, rooted in storytelling and emotional expression. With a career spanning performance, composition, and interdisciplinary collaboration, Toni has established himself as a versatile and evocative musical voice.
He began his musical studies in Mallorca before moving to Barcelona, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Piano Performance from the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) in 2020, studying piano with Lluís Vidal and Joan Díaz.
Toni’s career as a performer and composer has taken him across Spain, France, and the United States, engaging in projects that span jazz ensembles, contemporary dance, theater, and film. His work as an improviser and accompanist has led to numerous collaborations with leading artists across disciplines.
In the jazz world, Toni has been an integral part of several ensembles. He co-led and composed for the quartet Big Babo, performing over 40 concerts throughout the Balearic Islands and Catalonia between 2019 and 2023. He also served as the lead pianist for the Voodoo Children Big Band conducted by Toni Vaquer, recording their final album, scheduled for release in 2025. Additionally, he collaborated with singer-songwriter Magalí Datzira, performing on tour in Spain and France and contributing piano and keyboards to her latest two studio albums.
In theater, Toni was the musical director for the Madrid-based company La Breve Pausa. His original compositions were featured in productions such as The Golden Dragon by Roland Schimmelpfennig and The Other Shore by Gao Xingjian, both premiered in 2023. His ability to merge music with narrative also extends to film scoring, with recent compositions for independent films including The Session (Tiago Rosario) and Lonesome (Pau Zabaleta).
Toni’s contributions to contemporary dance include a long-standing collaboration with choreographer Iván Delgado, who commissioned him to create the music for Dos y punto, premiered at the International Dance Gala Homenatge a la Dansa in Terrassa, Barcelona. He has also worked with dancer and choreographer Angélica Barbosa on Cruzando Esquinas, premiered at the Morton Memorial Library in Rhinecliff, NY, and later performed at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center. In 2024, he was an artist-in-residence at Spoke the Hub Dancing Inc., where he developed new works in collaboration with Barbosa.
As a solo artist, Toni released his debut album Sol in 2021, showcasing his skills as both composer and improviser. The album was performed across Mallorca, Madrid, and Barcelona. His second solo album, On vas, is set to be released in 2025, continuing his exploration of immersive and emotionally resonant soundscapes. Beyond performance, Toni is an accomplished composer with a diverse portfolio spanning concert music, theater, dance, and film. Upcoming projects include commissions for new dance pieces by choreographers Lynn Parkerson, artistic director of Brooklyn Ballet, and the company Yang Sung & Poets—both set to premiere in 2025 at the prestigious WestFest Dance Festival in New York and the North Fork Arts Center in Greenport, NY.
His commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration remains a driving force in his career, fueling his dedication to creating music that transcends boundaries and resonates deeply with audiences. Toni is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Performer-Composer at The New School in New York City, where he has studied with Mary Kouyoumdjian, Arturo O'Farrill, and Darcy James Argue.
